20 Brilliant Mind-F*ck Movies

5. Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive is one of David Lynch€™s many mind-bending movies. The 2001 noir mystery focuses on wannabe Hollywood star Betty Elms (Naomi Watts), but surrounds her with a sprawling web of cryptic scenes, making for a tough-to-decipher viewing experience that intrigues as much as it entertains.

As the film goes on, instead of resolving mysteries, Lynch presents more, even switching actors around, giving different parts to different people as the movie ambles into its cryptic third act.

You go home wondering if anything was real, and if so €“ what did it actually mean? This is a film that embraces the spirit of a lucid fever-dream, presenting you with an ever-changing enigma of a story and refusing to let you understand. If you€™re into movie mind-f*cks, this one you really ought to seek out.
