20 Brilliant Sci-Fi & Fantasy Films Where Actors Play Opposite Themselves

8. Back to the Future Part II (1989)

Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future sequel is the very definition of more is more, sending Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) into the future in the DeLorean with a mission to save his family from ruin. And this future (2015) has flying cars, hoverboards, Jaws 19, '70s décor, Michael Jackson, and, uhh, CRT TVs.

While the film may not have gotten much right about the “future”, it does manage to make Marty’s family look very much like his real family, and that’s because Fox plays half of them himself. Obviously, he’s '80s Marty, but he’s also Marty Jr., his son who, in 2015, is about the same age Marty is in 1985. He’s got a squeakier voice, and he’s more of a dweeb and a weed, but he’s basically the same guy. Then there’s Marty Sr., which is just main Marty with a bit of age on him (provided via prosthetics).

Most curiously of all, however, Michael J. Fox plays Marty’s daughter Marlene, a teen girl whom you probably didn’t realise was Fox the first time round. A curious choice indeed, given Elisabeth Shue was playing both young and old Jennifer (Marty’s future wife) and could have stepped into the role easily. But this is what Bob Gale penned in the script, and it's what we got.
