18. Starlin's Staircase

The audio commentary of The Avengers confirms that this image - referred to as "the staircase" - from the scene in which Loki meets Chitauri leader "The Other" is a creative reference to the work of seminal Avengers writer and artist Jim Starlin. Starlin's work is likely to come back into play in future Avengers projects (even if it's not in Phase 2 now that Ultron has been unveiled as the villain) and this shot, which Joss Wehson said encapsulates the spirit of Starlin's work in the commentary is something of a foreshadow to that.
