20 Comedy Movies You Must See Before You Die
8. Monty Python And The Holy Grail (1975)
Produced on an incredibly tight budget (one that inadvertently made the movie at lot funnier), Monty Python And The Holy Grail is pretty much Pythonesque genius defined and - all these years later - still stands as one of the most consistently hilarious motion pictures ever created by human hands.
This uproarious comic venture, which sees King Arthur and his knights on an ill-judged quest to find the elusive cup of the movie's title, thrives on its ability to do whatever the hell it wants, whenever it wants; indeed, the film doesn't even finish properly. It just "ends" on a whim. Everyone shines here, especially leading man Graham Chapman, who leads his band of merry idiots on a pointless voyage and still manages to earn our sympathies.
We can all fondly recall the Holy Grail's most famous moments, of course, and there are plenty to go around; the coconut horse hooves (which came as a result of the tiny budget - the Pythons actually wanted real horses!); the song and dance at Camelot; the battle with the Black Knight ("It's just a flesh wound"!). A classic, simply because it remains near unrivalled in its utter ridiculousness.
