20 Comic Book Movies That Are Practically Flawless
17. Batman Returns (1992)
Tim Burton may have knocked the ball out the park with his initial Batman movie in 1989 - a film that changed the way superhero movies were seen and made for years to come - but he actually one-upped himself three years later with Batman Returns.
Following Michael Keaton's Caped Crusader as he comes face-to-face with the vile supervillain Penguin (Danny DeVito) and crosses paths with the elusive Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), the menacing sequel revels in its outlandishness whilst remaining true to Batman's dark and gritty comic book allure.
Undoubtedly the darkest of the many Batman adaptations since its release (which could be set to change with the upcoming Matt Reeves effort), Batman Returns is peculiar in a wonderfully Burtonesque way, but also powerful in its depiction of Bruce Wayne's struggles.
Honestly, there's very little to dislike, other than the fact Burton didn't want to make a follow-up, dooming Batman's future until Christopher Nolan came along.
