If ever there was a contender for the ultimate car chase movie then Vanishing Point would be right up there at the top of the list. On its release, however, there was a distinct possibility it would have faded into obscurity just weeks after its release. A flop in America, it was only its success in the UK and Europe which caused the studios to give it another shot in the States, and today it remains a cult classic. Amidst the high speed chases Vanishing Point offers a commentary on Vietnam War-era America and the collapse of the American dream, but it is the speeding muscle cars which impresses the most. Not only is Vanishing Point one of Steven Spielberg's favourite films of all time, it was also a huge inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's grindhouse homage, Death Proof.
