20 Crazy Facts You Just Have To Accept To Enjoy The Transformers Franchise
8. They're Too Adult
The vast majority of the Transformers fanbase has always been kids rather than adults, and as such, it's rather disappointing that Bay chose to take his four movies in an increasingly mature direction, pushing the 12A/PG-13 rating about as far as he could along the way. Sure, the original animated Transformers: The Movie had one infamous utterance of "Oh s***!", but that's nothing on what these movies serve up. There's the overtly sexualised female characters, the queasy sex references on a whole (the masturbation jokes in the first and fourth film are particularly inappropriate), and a number of totally unnecessary uses of the F-word. There are ways to appeal to older teenagers and adults rather than just throwing sex and profanity at the screen: what about likeable, witty characters like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? No impropriety needed. Instead, Bay takes the low road and leaves these movies not particularly appropriate for younger children in the process, which for anyone who grew up loving Transformers, seems kinda sad.
