20 Most Depressing Film Endings Since 2000

7. The Departed (2006)

The Ending €“ Having risked his neck for the entirety of his policing career by being a €œrat€ infiltrating the ranks of Frank Costello€™s (Jack Nicholson) crew, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is set to finally receive all the praise he deserves for the heroics he has shown. He has captured Sullivan (Matt Damon) and all he now needs to do is return him to the station to explain that Sullivan is the corrupt cop. Just as the two men are about to exit the escalator Costigan is unceremoniously shot in the head by another one of Costello€™s undercover mobsters. Depressing Because €“ The Departed €“ like most of Martin Scorsese€™s work €“ is a long picture. We have spent over two-and-a-half hours getting a detailed study of Billy, painstakingly delivered by the great DiCaprio. Clearly, we are all rooting for Costigan€™s corner. Then in one flash Boston€™s champion lies dead in a pool of his own blood and we feel like we€™ve been cheated as we want to see Billy triumph. Even Sullivan seems shocked that the supposed good guy got €œwhacked€ in one of the final scenes. Don€™t do this to us again Marty! A Silver Lining? The Grim Reaper in the world of The Departed may not be just, but he is eager. Not long after Costigan€™s funeral, Sullivan returns to his apartment where he is shot and killed by Staff Sergeant Dignam (Mark Wahlberg).
