20 Most Depressing Film Endings Since 2000

15. United 93 (2006)

The Ending €“ After the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 become aware of the incidents at the Twin Towers and Pentagon, they realise that their plane is also intended to be utilised as a weapon. The brave passengers then decide to courageously recapture the plane, having discovered that one of their ill-fated number has flight experience. Upon mounting their counterattack the passengers manage to kill two of the terrorists before breaking down the cockpit door. What ensues is a struggle for the controls of the strategically-imperative plane €“ then the aircraft takes a nosedive and crashes into a field in Pennsylvania. Depressing because €“ The most starkly depressing thing about this is that the whole film is based on true events. The characters played by these actors are in no way fictionalised and those portrayed in this film were just normal people like us who happened to board a flight that would end their lives. A Silver Lining? The sacrifice made by those on Flight 93 meant that many more lives were saved. They prevented the hijacked plane from reaching its intended target which would resulted in far more casualties.
