Jan de Bont's follow-up to Speed wasn't quite the same white-knuckle thrill-ride, but nevertheless delivered a thoroughly entertaining time.

Clocking in at a positively slender 113 minutes for the genre's standards, Twister milks the central tornado outbreak for every terrifying drop, deploying state-of-the-art VFX to deliver a unique-for-its-time disaster flick that's been imitated countless times since.

The charming work of leads Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt add a lot of character to this shaggy romp, which still holds up relatively well today, in large part thanks to its thunderous, Oscar-nominated sound design.

Twister isn't the biggest or most ambitious disaster movie going, but it sets its sights on a modest goal and delivers the high-wire thrills accordingly.
