Lex Luthor's (Gene Hackman) diabolical scheme results in Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) being killed when her car falls into a crevice and she suffocates to death. An enraged Superman (Christopher Reeve) then flies into the air and, depending on your interpretation of the scene, either a) flies faster than the speed of light or b) gathers enough momentum to reverse the rotation of the Earth, somehow facilitating time travel in any event. Clark goes back to before Lois' death and manages to save her this time, but the scene is an unfortunately dumb stand-out in an otherwise great movie, one that's had comic book fans and general science nerds alike debating for decades. It's probably best to just settle on, "Superman can do anything" and not rack your brain too much about it.
