20 DVD Commentaries You Need To Hear Before You Die
17. Almost Famous
Participant(s): Cameron Crowe Cameron Crowe has treated audiences to many entertaining films over the years; Almost Famous is not only his best but also by far his most personal. Crowe wrote, co-produced and directed the film. Before entering the world of cinema he was a contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine announcing the fact that the 2000 film about an underage journalist writing for the same magazine is heavily based on his life. In his commentary Crowe goes into great detail analysing every aspect of the coming-of-age film, discussing which incidents in his own life inspired each of the scenes. He even lets fans know which real-life individuals the characters were based on; for example Russell Hammond of the fictive band Stillwater is based on Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers. Throughout the film's commentary the directors obvious passion for his very personal movie radiates through. He even brings in his mother, Alice Marie, who is able to provide even more insight about moments she recognises as having been inspired by her sons youth.
