20 Most Epic Character Introductions In Movies

6. Quint - Jaws (1975)

Although the Indianapolis speech is the character's most famous moment, Quint's introduction to Steven Spielberg's prototypical blockbuster is just as memorable. Dragging his nails across a chalkboard and silencing an entire room of panicked Amity residents, Robert Shaw brings a gravitas and lived-in quality to the character that is all the more impressive when you consider he was cast in the role less than two weeks before filming.

With all eyes in the room fixed on him, Quint doesn't have time for pleasantries and cuts right to the chase. Upping the ante, he demands $10,000 to kill the man-eating shark, famously promising to deliver 'the head, the tail, the whole damn thing'. With the financial repercussions on the town as his leverage, Quint uses his reputation amongst the locals to deliver a convincing pitch. Smirking as he makes his exit, Quint knows that he's the right man for the job. Belying his rugged appearance, Quint's introduction also showcases a quiet confidence and charisma in the character as he believes in his abilities to take out Amity's great white problem. Of course, he doesn't end up going it alone but the contrasting personalities of Quint, Brody and Hooper are part of what makes the adventure so entertaining.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
