20 Essential Euro Horror Films That Kick Ass

10. Demons (1985)

demons Directed by Lamberto 'Son of Mario' Bava, Demons is quite a fun little Euro horror movie. The action takes place within a cinema where patrons are enjoying a gory horror movie. A woman called Rosemary scrapes herself on a mysterious mask in the foyer and this turns her into a demon when she goes to the loo mid-film. She attacks her friend who also turns into a demon and falls through the cinema screen, alerting the patrons that something is desperately wrong. The patrons cannot find a way out of the cinema and more and more of them are attacked and turned into demons. The film focuses on two uninfected people - Cheryl and George and their bid to daringly escape the cinema. Dario Argento had a massive influence on Demons - co-writing and producing it. This probably accounts for the quality of the movie. The acting is laughable and over the top but tension and excitement is maintained the whole way through the film and to top it off, there is a fantastic heavy metal soundtrack that is entirely appropriate! The cinema setting is wonderful for creating a claustrophobic atmosphere in the film. Lamberto is not even the smallest patch on his father Mario's skills as a film director, but in Demons, he managed to create one of the more memorable Euro horrors of the 1980s

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
