5. The L.A. Riots - Straight Outta Compton
The Moment: F. Gary Gray's (The Negotiator, Law Abiding Citizen) biopic of the pre-dominant rap group N.W.A. can't help but examine the cultural touchstones of the era, namely the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which essentially turned the group's iconic tune F*** the Police into a protest anthem, and going by what's been shown off in the trailer, it looks the movie will focus significantly on the incident. Why It Will Define 2015: Because biopics are a dime a dozen these days, but to see a movie tackling such an interesting group of subjects and such an incisive period of American history should prove to be something completely opposed to the norm. Far from the Oscar bait of many biopics, expect Straight Outta Compton to be angry, in-your-face cinema that takes on its own relevance in the age of shootings of dubious legality throughout the U.S.
