20 Essential Movie Moments That Will Define 2016

5. Batman Meets The Joker & Harley Quinn - Suicide Squad

The Moment: In an apparent flashback sequence, Batman (Ben Affleck) meets The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and presumably brings them to justice following an extended chase, leading to the movie's present-day events.

Why It Will Define 2016: Because this is the make-or-break year for the DC Extended Universe in many ways. Batman v Superman was a critical bust but fairly successful at the box office (if falling far short of that projected $1 billion gross), and Warner will be doubling down on Suicide Squad in the hope that it can course-correct the franchise's overall reception.

Plus, obviously, this is the first big screen rendition of The Joker since Heath Ledger's, and seeing him face off against Batman is just going to set up a ton of tantalising possibilities for future movies (namely Batman's next solo film).

Then there's Harley Quinn, and it's hard to imagine her being anything less than electric in this exchange, possibly stealing the show and becoming one of the year's most memorable screen "villains".
