20 Fails That Nearly Killed The Marvel Film Universe
11. Jane Foster Was Originally Turned Into A Villain (Thor: The Dark World)
An original plot for Thor: The Dark World involved Thor's love interest Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) being turned evil by the Aether, at which point she would use her powers to destroy the Dark Elf homeworld Svartalfheim. This was ultimately scrapped because it was felt that three villains would be too much to juggle for one movie, and it would also take even more focus away from Malekith. Why It Would've Ruined The MCU: The Thor-Jane romance isn't exactly a particularly successful component of the MCU, so turning Jane into a villain isn't an inherently awful idea, but as Marvel themselves realised, it would just be too much for one movie. Plus, the whole brainwashed zombie shtick has already been done with Hawkeye in The Avengers: do we really want a quasi-repeat of this? Also, Malekith was already a pretty under-served villain, and with Bad Jane thrown into the mix, he'd probably have even less of a personality.
