20 Fails That Nearly Killed The Marvel Film Universe

2. No Loki, More Malekith (Thor: The Dark World)

The original plan for Thor: The Dark World was that Tom Hiddleston's Loki would not appear in the movie at all, and Christopher Eccleston's villain Malekith the Accursed would instead have a much more expanded role, as well as the Dark Elves' mythology being dealt with in far greater detail. However, following Hiddleston's excellent performance in The Avengers, the script was given a substantial re-write to include him. Why It Would've Ruined The MCU: Hiddleston is easily one of the best things about the MCU, and to exclude him from a Thor movie after The Avengers left us wondering what might happen to him next would've been a gigantic mistake. Instead, his ultimate inclusion turned out to be the best part of an otherwise pretty low-tier MCU movie. Also, we're not so hot on the idea of more Malekith. From what we saw of him in The Dark World, he was a pretty uninteresting, bog-standard, even forgettable villain, and there wasn't much enthusiasm for seeing his part expanded. Basically, less Loki and more generic villain would've completely sucked the life out of the movie. We're already disappointed enough that Loki won't be in The Avengers 2, dammit!
