Based on reporter Herve Chabaliers autobiography about his battle with alcoholism, One For The Road takes place in a French Alps retreat where Herve (François Cluzet) confronts his dangerous addiction. Hes introduced to a quirky cast of characters - including a loudmouthed lush (Michel Vuillermoz) and a vodka-sipping vixen (Melanie Thierry) - who reveal the hazards of falling off the wagon too many times. Admittedly there are times when this film tackles the subject of alcoholism all too safely, making it seem as systematic as a 12-step program. However, there are plenty of powerful moments to counterbalance that, including the main character getting a painful visit from his wife where she heartbreakingly lets all of her emotions out of the bag. Directed by Mexican filmmaker Eva López-Sánchez, One For The Road is a bold attempt to get inside the alcoholic's head, to examine his fears and failures.
