20 Feel Good Movies You Need To Watch Now
7. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
“Fear can hold you prisoner, Hope can set you free”
It’s the highest rated movie ever on IMDB for a reason. What started off as a box-office failure has received the praise it deserves over the years and is now considered one of the greatest films ever. Based on a Stephen King novella, The Shawshank Redemption is a story of a bond between inmates Andy Dufresne and Ellis Boyd ‘Red’ Redding, a growing friendship of over 20 years.
Being a prison drama, The Shawshank Redemption can be hard hitting with matters of death, injustice and abuse. But its expression of need for bravery, freedom and hope – represented between Andy and Red - is so well written and crafted that it almost takes away from the harsh realities of jail life. The drama and conflicts are what make the deeply emotional climax all the more inspiring and uplifting. It’s a film that just gets better with each viewing, it’s one of Stephen King’s favourite film adaptations of his own work and Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins are perfect in the lead roles.
