20 Film Franchises That Were Cancelled After One Movie
9. Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World focuses on a newly assigned sea captain who sends his crew on a highly dangerous mission during the Napoleonic Wars. Considering it was based on a 20-book saga and had Oscar winner Russell Crowe in the lead role, it seemed like Master and Commander had great potential as a franchise.
Although it made $211 million on a $150 million budget, the sequel was a no-go. Since a film usually has to make double its money to be regarded as a success, the studio lost interest in franchising the series.
Nevertheless, Crowe refused to back down and badgered the studio for years to give Master and Commander another shot. Even though he teased a sequel was on the way 14 years after the original was released, it never materialised.
