When it was announced that Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo would be adapted into film for the second time in two years, many viewers dismissed it as a pointless Hollywood remake. But with visionary director David Fincher taking the helm and Rooney Mara's phenomenal Oscar-nominated performance as Lisbeth Salander, the film was met with universal praise.

It is erroneously believed that the planned sequels never came to be because the film tanked. Although it didn't make as much money as Sony expected, it did turn a profit, allowing the two follow-ups to be green-lit.

But due to major script revisions and delays, the studio thought it best to reboot the series. This was irritating to Rooney Mara who received many piercings to portray Lisbeth, including on her nipple. When the film wrapped, she kept the nipple piercing, thinking there was no point taking it out and putting it back on for the sequels. But since the follow-ups for cancelled, this means Mara kept this piercing for years for absolutely no reason!
