That accolade goes to 1953's Roman Holiday. Okay, so it's just a schmaltzy romantic comedy of modest production values and basic plot, but does any other film epitomise 1950s so well as this one? The film flows with effortless grace, charm, and chic, and provides a glimpse of the actress who would go on to define mid-century glamour and style. Audrey Hepburn nearly lost out on the role to Elizabeth Taylor, but it's impossible to visualise anybody else in the role of naive Princess Ann. Alongside big-screen heavyweight Gregory Peck, the pair form an iconic duo that goes down as one of cinema's classic romances. Roman Holiday doesn't need to be seen because it broke any boundaries or revolutionised cinema. It needs to be seen because it's a two hour slice of 1950s purity. It's fun; it's entertaining; it's iconic. What's your favourite film of the 1950s? Leave a comment below!
