2. The Turin Horse
The Turin Horse is unlike any other movie ever made because it eschews many typical narrative devices for very long and drawn out scenes of just nothing. While that sounds very bad it actually is what makes the film so brilliant. There is an incredibly hopeless tone that the black and white photography gives to the movie that adds to the atmosphere. The Turin Horse lives and dies off of its atmosphere since there is very minimal dialogue. The film is very boring, which only serves to heighten the realistic elements of the narrative. Bela Tarr directs everything usually with very long takes and with a sense of impending doom that makes the movie very transfixing. The audience spends two and a half hours basically watching the main characters do nothing but once the film is over you may notice yourself caring much more for them than you had realized. This is why The Turin Horse is so haunting. It sneaks up on your emotions and reworks the way that you typically associate with characters.
