20 Films That Prove The 1990s Was The Worst Decade For Horror
2. Troll 2
There are, for certain, any number of stupid little monster movies from the 1990s which might easily have made this list: Leprechaun and its sequels, and/or the later entries in the Critters and Ghoulies franchises. But as any trash movie aficionado knows, Troll 2 isn't just any bad horror movie; it's the bad horror movie, and has long since been confirmed as a cult classic owing to its immeasurable badness.
A sequel in name only to the 1986 movie (in fact, it doesn't even feature trolls at all), Troll 2 centres on an All-American family who for some reason decide to take a vacation in a nondescript country town called Nilbog. While there, the youngest child (guided by the ghost of his grandfather) discovers to his horror that the town is populated by vegetarian goblins who want to eat his family by turning them into vegetables.
It's every bit as deranged as it sounds, and all the more laughable for how badly made it is on every level: acting, direction, writing, music, special effects - all are absolutely laughable. This being the case, it's very hard not to feel at least a little affection for Troll 2 - but there's also no denying that it is a truly terrible piece of filmmaking.
The film's young star Michael Stephenson has since charted the fall-out from Troll 2, and its subsequent cult status, in the documentary Best Worst Movie.
