20 Films That Will Define 2016

8. Assassin's Creed

Release Date: 21st December (US) - 30th December (UK) Director: Justin Kurzel Starring: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson Remember that statement earlier about 2016 being the year of quality video-game adaptations? Well, look no further. Unquestionably the most anticipated big-screen transition of a pixelated icon, Assassin's Creed will be shooting up must-watch lists for both fans and critics alike after viewing Macbeth (run and see it if you haven't; seriously), as the central trio of director and stars will be reunited here. Following a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day. How awesome does that sound? Those familiar with the gameplay will know just how cinematic it feels anyway so a film is entirely appropriate. Add the wonderful Cotillard with auteur Kurzel, and throw Irons, Gleeson, Michael Kenneth Williams and Carlos Bardem into the boiling pot, and you are ready to serve one beautiful-tasting broth. There is no doubt that attendees at San Diego Comic-Con next year will be going mad for this one.
