Do you remember the late great Howard Ashman, who made out childhoods better with the music of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin? Well, it all started here with the horror musical Little Shop of Horrors. You can tell the soundtrack is the works of Ashman (and Alan Menken) because every song is catchy, well written and cleverly combines an upbeat tune for such horrifying lyrics.

Although the movie is a lot of fantasy, there is a great deal of realism presented through the characters. Seymour, who is stuck in a dead-end job at a florist, and Audrey, also stuck in the same job and in an abusive relationship, long for a simpler life away in the suburbs. It is not until he discovers an unusual looking plant, named “Audrey II”, that will change their lives forever.

The original ending was intended to be much darker as Audrey was going to be killed by Audrey II. But for a movie which is just as much of a cheesy musical comedy as it is a horror, the directors went with the much nicer conclusion of Audrey getting to live out her ‘somewhere that’s green’ dream with Seymour.
