20 Films To Watch If You Love Halloween But Hate Horror

15. Young Frankenstein (1974)

Mel Brooks has parodied the western, the outer-space adventure, the silent movie and of course the 1930s monster horror. But in this instance, he takes it slightly further by specifically satirising James Whale’s film adaptation of Frankenstein.

Young Frankenstein has all the best parts of a Mel Brooks confined to one. With Gene Wilder as the lead role, Dr Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced Fron-ken-steen) is the grandson of the scientist who created the famous monster. He has always tried to distance his reputation from the legend of his ‘mad’ grandfather but ends up returning to Transylvania to the family castle. And that’s when things descend into silliness.

The film is able to poke fun at the original movie whilst still paying tribute to Mary Shelley’s novella. The cinematography looks surprisingly beautiful and every joke and gag is always executed with perfect timing.
