Seriously, don't underestimate Dan Aykroyd's commitment to shoehorning in as many references to occult nonsense and parapsychology as possible. That little vignette at the start of the film, before the nascent Ghostbusters get chucked out of Columbia University, where Venkman's doing the ESP test with the cards? Real experiment. The Rhine Experiments were conducted at Duke University during the thirties, but otherwise the set up of the tests are pretty much the same down to the electric shocks given to the participants whose guesses were wrong. Not sure if Rhine as much a horn dog as Venkman...
