20 Great Films You Won't Believe Aren't On IMDb's Top 250

8. Mulholland Drive

Toy Story 2
Universal

Rating: 8.0

David Lynch doesn't currently have a film on the Top 250, which is fairly scandalous. Mulholland Drive is the one which is the closest, but is just off the list.

Aside from Lynch himself, no-one quite knows what Mulholland Drive is actually about. Everyone has their own theories, but to ask what this film means is to miss the point entirely. The real question about Mulholland Drive should be: do you actually want to know what it means?

Explaining it feels like a disservice, considering the singular and intoxicating vibe this film presents with its many symbols, puzzles and twists. It is ultimately a powerful and gripping film, since within all the layers and random scenes, there is also a compelling narrative about the dark side of Hollywood lurking somewhere beneath. Thanks to David Lynch's flawless direction, Naomi Watts' near-perfect performance and a great story (well, fragments of one anyway) this is a modern masterpiece and being confused has never been more enjoyable.

Various recent rankings have deservedly said this is one of the top films of the 21st century, so at least it's had the right recognition elsewhere.
