20 Great Movie Franchises That Became Unwatchable

15. Predator

The Predator
Fox

This is the only entry on this list that must come with the caveat that things have actually turned around quite drastically in recent years. With Dan Trachtenberg at the helm, Prey, Predator: Killer of Killers, and Predator: Badlands have all been smash hits, and lightyears ahead of what the franchise was producing before.

However, that doesn't change the fact that for a long time this film series was unwatchable. For 35 years, really. Predator in 1987 was Arnie at his best, pitted against the Yautja in a fight to the death, and it was compelling, adrenaline-pumping, and exactly what it needed to be.

Then, there was a span of over three decades before another good Predator movie was made. The first sequel made the bizarre decision to move the setting to gang-riddled Los Angeles, and with it lost much of its appeal, and without Schwarzenegger, much of its charm.

Predators had some potential, but the execution was way off where it needed to be, while The Predator in 2018 managed to waste an impressively stacked cast on something so forgettable. All this without even mentioning the horrific Alien Vs Predator movies, which, as ahead of their time as they were, should have been licenses to print money. Instead, they did absolutely nothing to further either franchise.
