20 Great Movie Remakes With One Miscast Role
4. Steve Martin as Orin Scrivello, DDS - Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
Frank Oz took Roger Corman’s mild 1960 horror comedy Little Shop of Horrors and turned it into a kooky alternative musical to rival Rocky Horror in 1986. The updated film is set on Skid Row and has bumbling flower shop worker Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) come into possession of an unusual, ever-growing carnivorous plant that he names Audrey II, after Audrey Fulquard (Ellen Greene), the co-worker he’s secretly in love with.
Moranis made the lead part his own, and Greene came across from the Alan Menken/ Howard Ashman stage musical version, but there are a number of stars whose appearance in the film was designed to stick out. This includes a bunch of comedy guest stars from the time, such as Jim Belushi, John Candy, and Bill Murray in cameo roles, and Steve Martin in a much larger part as Audrey’s sadistic biker-cum-dentist boyfriend Orin Scrivello.
Now, anyone who is familiar with Martin on stage or on screen knows the kind of roles he goes for: comedy everymen, fathers, husbands, and eccentric types. He does not play tough-as-nails greasers with sadomasochistic fetishes. Tremendously miscast as Orin Scrivello, DDS, Martin hams it up all the way and gives the film that extra bit of zany flavour despite not fitting in at all.
