20 Great Movies That Were Accused Of Being Rip-Offs

9. A Bug's Life (1998)

Could this list have been made up entirely of Pixar movies? Given that we've actually opted to leave a few of their movies off the list, the answer is probably "yes." So here's a fun-loving animated flick about an ant that goes to the big city to recruit a group of warriors who will help his colony defend itself against a bunch of nasty grasshoppers. Sound familiar to you at all? Perhaps, given that it's the plot of Seven Samurai, except with samurai instead of ants! How Much Of A Rip-Off Are We Talking? People seem to think that it's okay to rip-off Akira Kurosawa's work because he's Japanese or something, but whereas The Magnificent Seven - which also clings to a similar plot as Seven Samurai with cowboys replacing the titular samurai - A Bug's Life repackages the story with circus bugs who turn out to be fraudulent. Pixar didn't credit Kurosawa's movie as an influence, however, despite the fact that the beats of the narrative are near on exact. Oops. Overall Rip-Off Rating: 4/5
