20 Great Movies That Were Accused Of Being Rip-Offs

8. Galaxy Quest (1999)

You don't hear a lot about Galaxy Quest nowadays, despite the fact that it's still probably one of the funniest films of the '90s (J.J. Abrams called it "one of the best Star Trek movies ever made"). Starring Tim Allen, Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver, the story follows three TV actors who are mistaken for the brave characters they used to play on television, and are drawn into a conflict. Which is pretty much the storyline for Three Amigos, with Steve Martin. How Much Of A Rip-Off Are We Talking? Um, Galaxy Quest is very similar to Three Amigos, actually, mostly because the plot hinges on the exact same narrative beats to tell its tale. That's to say, the movies are about equally obnoxiousness douchebags who have to learn to be less douchebag-like in order to prevent disaster. There are other moments that ring true in both pictures: the fact that the cultures they inhabit don't know what acting is and that both cultures are told at the end of the films that they should learn to stand up for themselves. Galaxy Quest is basically Three Amigos in space, to be honest. Overall Rip-Off Rating: 4/5
