20 Great Movies Since 2000 That You Forgot Existed
12. The Fountain (2006)
Upon its release back in 2006, The Fountain was looked at as something akin to a disaster - financially, creatively, however you want to look at it, it was met with a large amount of distain. A bit of time and reflection has done Darren Aronofsky's most inherently jarring picture a lot of good, though; now it's entirely possible to look at The Fountain through a different pair of glasses, and with a bit more patience and understanding. Which begs the question: is it actually a masterpiece? Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. Aronofsky's picture, which is still something of a muddle no matter how you look at it, consists of "three interconnecting stories" - usually a shortcut term for describing a picture as pretentious - that span the length of time, with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz playing multiple characters and... well, you have to see it to make your mind up. Pretentious? Beautiful? Insane? It's a trip worth taking just to see how it makes you feel.
