20 Great Movies Since 2000 That You Forgot Existed
7. Munich (2005)
Steven Spielberg helmed this thrilling filmic retelling of Operation Wrath of God - Israel's top secret retaliation initiative to the Munich massacre which occurred at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Munich was the movie that convinced the world that Eric Bana could kick ass, of course - at least it was according to Seth Rogen and pals in Judd Apatow's Knocked Up; it was also nominated for Best Picture in 2006. Spielberg's mastery and technical prowess is apparent from the very first shot to the very last. Though he renders the film as something akin to an espionage thriller, he doesn't try to avoid the obvious moral implications of such a complicated chapter in history. Munich is both dense and flawed, but it's also an incredibly moving and masterful picture - one that rarely finds itself considered amongst the greatest movies of the last 20 years, though one could certainly make a case for its inclusion amongst established classics.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
