20 Greatest Dance Scenes In Movie History
13. Jack Rabbit Slim's - Pulp Fiction (1994)
Yet another dance scene featuring John Travolta and perhaps the most popular dance moment in a non-dancing, non-musical movie. Pulp Fiction was a game-changer in cinema for its non-linear storytelling, eclectic soundtrack and new use of language exchanged in the movies. It is the crown jewel of Quentin Tarantino’s film work, one that continues to influence directors to this very day.
And there’s no greater example of a movie scene going against the linear structure than the unexpected twist contest at Jack Rabbit Slim’s. We had seen this done before in Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs when Mr Blonde dances to the song ‘Stuck in the Middle with You’ whilst pouring gasoline, but it’s taken to a different level in Pulp Fiction.
There’s just something so entertaining about this scene, whether it’s the lighthearted nature of the dance against the serious facial expressions of Mia and Vince or the whole thing being a nod to John Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever/Grease days. As the entire film celebrates American pop culture, it also creates a moment that will go down in the history of iconic pop culture.
