"I'll... be... right... here." If you're not ugly-crying and struggling to see the screen through your tears by the end of ET, you must have a heart of stone. ET may be a weird-looking little alien guy, but it's certainly very easy to find yourself attached to him rather quickly. So after spending so much time watching Elliot and co. try to save ET from the big bad government men, our nerves are pretty much shattered. We just want to see a happy ending where Elliot and ET can walk off into the sunset together, free to eat as many Reeses Pieces as they want without interference from the FBI. But alas, it was not to be. The adult part of us knows that ET must go home, but we're all the 8-year-old versions of ourselves while we're watching this movie. Just when we think it can't get any more emotional, ET sticks out his extra long finger and reminds Elliot that he'll always be with him in his heart. Steven Spielberg, what happened to you as a child that makes you hurt us so?
