9. Spider Man 2

Sam Raimi’s first screen outing for Peter Parker has its moments, sure, but the campy tone never really gels with proceedings and Willem Dafoe’s theoretically terrifying Green Goblin ends up looking regrettably daft as a result.

However the follow-up, which sees a conflicted Peter forced to don his suit once again to take down Alfred Molina’s tragic villain Doctor Octopus, marries the director’s comic book sensibilities with some appropriately heightened and cartoony melodramatic emotional action.

The set pieces are bigger, the acting cornier, and the effect is ironically far more effective—Spiderman has never seemed as cartoony, and ironically, real as he did in this early outing.
