20 Greatest Movie Blockbusters Of The 21st Century (So Far)

8. Shrek

Dreamworks

What? We’re not leaving Dreamwork’s finest creation (and Mike Myers’ second finest role, shout out to Austin Powers) off this list just because it’s been two decades since he first landed onscreen and his shtick has been well and truly re-appropriated by the schmaltzy kid’s films that Shrek was intended to satirize.

Yes, every second Disney offering nowadays may claim to subvert classic fairy tales, but before any of these remakes came into existence, this charmingly meta story of a swamp ogre turned reluctant hero offered a flip, ironic spoof of family blockbusters which nonetheless managed to be a funny, clever, and occasionally moving entry into the genre—not bad for a flick which started its life as a Chris Farley vehicle.
