20 Greatest Movie Blockbusters Of The 21st Century (So Far)
6. The Bourne Ultimatum
Probably
the darkest post 9/11 action franchise, this chilly thriller cast the CIA as its
villains and offered an enigmatic conclusion to the story of the franchise’s
eponymous amnesiac agent. Matt Damon was as solid as ever, bouncing between stoic
and unsettled as the hero reeling from endless revelations about his dark past,
but it’s United 93 director Paul Greengrass’ hyper kinetic, absurdly up-close filmmaking
style which elevated this thriller to instant classic status.
Never letting up for a second, Greengrass invites the viewer into Bourne’s confusion and paranoia via jumpy editing and some of the shakiest camerawork found outside of found footage, and it’s this stylized direction which makes this thriller so immediately and unforgettably immersive and effective.
