Former Troma filmmaker James Gunn’s contribution to the MCU takes the director’s usual fusion of dark comedy and genre elements, as seen in 2006’s gross out horror Slither and 2010’s bleak black comedy Super, and adds an infusion of real heart and charming nostalgia which made this one instantly irresistible upon its 2014 release.
The “rag tag bunch of misfits must learn to work together to defeat intergalactic enemy” plotting may not be too original but this crew certainly are, and between Chris Pratt’s effortlessly charming Starlord, Zoe Saldana’s edgy love interest, Bradley Cooper’s nervy loose cannon, and Bautista’s stoic comic relief, there isn’t a weak link in the entire titular ensemble—and we haven’t even mentioned Groot!
