20 Greatest Movie Psychos Of All Time

5. Patrick Bateman - American Psycho (2000)

americanPsycho Cast asunder in shallow, greedy, Yuppie New York, Patrick Bateman eagerly plays along with the conceits of the characters around him - engaged for convenience sake, a high powered job that is empty, he compares business cards and gets quite upset when his fall short of perfection. He doesn't even know his friends' names and gets them mixed up. He is actually regarded as a joke in his social circle. This inspires him to murderous rages and the killing of his superiors. He also has a taste for hookers whom he likes to humiliate, abuse, debase - sometimes leading to death. He tries to compensate for his insecurities by buying the best clothes, the best stereo. He is excessively vain and particular about his grooming. He even lets slip casual remarks to his friends that he has killed, but none of them pay attention. His life is empty and meaningless. In a rage he kills a homeless man and a dog, kills his co-worker for having better business cards, he kills two women after a threesome. There are more murders but Patrick gets away with it all and realises he will never be caught. He says there is no catharsis and the murders have been meaningless but he will continue to inflict his pain on others. I wonder how he fared in the caring, sharing 1990s?

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
