20 Greatest Revenge Movies Of All-Time

5. Oldboy

Tartan Films

Oldboy is one of those movies that, from time to time, somebody at a party wearing black-framed glasses will ask you whether you've seen, just hoping that you'll say no, so they can reply with a pre-prepared statement along the lines of: "Oh, man, you gotta see it! It's insane."

Annoying as that scenario would be, purely because said person presumably wants to let you know they like "edgy foreign movies," Oldboy remains a must see. The story, which is weird as hell, focuses on a man named Oh Dae-su, who - after being locked up in a room for 15 years for no reason - sets out to find those responsible for imprisoning him, which leads to a mysterious quest riddled with bloodshed.

Beautifully directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Choi Min-Sik, Oldboy is perhaps best known for its "corridor fight" scene, which depicts Oh Dae-su as he takes on a relentless army of goons in one unbroken shot. But there's more to this revenge thriller than fights; it's a haunting, bleak and (most importantly) twisty motion picture that not only depicts vengeance, but also delves into its nature.
