20 Greatest Revenge Movies Of All-Time
4. Mad Max
Mad Max depicts a horrific version of Australia in which biker gangs intent on burning, destroying and raping the hell out of what it left of humanity roam endless desert wastelands. Mel Gibson (in his second movie to make this list - who knew this guy liked revenge so much?) plays the titular Max, a man who finds himself steered onto a path of revenge when his best friend, wife and daughter are murdered.
The hook here, of course, is that Mad Max depicts a once "good" man turned downright crazy as he attempts to find retribution for the deaths of his loved ones - the quest for revenge consumes every inch of his being, which - by the end of the picture - renders Gibson's hero as a shell of his former self.
Gibson is brilliant as Max - his performance is, by turns, dramatic, devastating and unhinged. The movie itself, directed with a rawness by George Miller, holds up to this day. As a study in revenge and its associated madness, it's hard to beat Mad Max.
