20 Hidden Horror Gems On Netflix
11. The Monster
When Kathy, a divorced and alcoholic mother to Lizzy, has to up and take them both out in the middle of the night, it's to deliver her to her father for custody. Perhaps permanently, as Lizzy makes it abundantly clear that's what she wants.
However, driving through the woods turns into an entirely different affair when they collide with a wolf, finishing it off after another animal has attacked it. Scared and relying only on each other, the pair have to survive in a woodland plagued by something far more monstrous than their relationship.
Since it's released by A24, you can almost guarantee it's going to be an excellently paced horror movie with a deeply disturbing tone, and The Monster delivers on that tenfold. Taut and terrifying, it's a simple story with a dark underbelly, and some excellent performances from its leads.
