20 Hidden Sci-Fi Movie Gems To Watch On Netflix

12. Antiviral

Directing talent isn€™t necessarily hereditary, as anybody who€™s had the misfortune of watching a Jennifer (daughter of David) Lynch film will tell you. But one filmmaking dynasty where quality appears to run in the family is the Cronenbergs, with Brandon - son of body horror master David - has made a storming debut with 2012€™s Antiviral. Picking up on many of the recurring themes and ideas in his dad€™s work (including the recent Map To The Stars), Antiviral extrapolates from the current cult of celebrity and takes it to a sickening, if plausible, degree: obsessive fans pay to be injected with the same illnesses and diseases as their favourite stars. With a mostly up-and-coming cast, the younger Cronenberg manages to craft a prophetic sci-fi chiller that€™s not that far from where we are now, stating his main inspiration came from a talk show interview with Sarah Michelle Gellar where €œshe said she was sick and if she sneezed she'd infect the whole audience, and everyone just started cheering.€
