David Mackenzie is a director who deserves about a thousand times more acclaim than he gets already. Credibly working in a totally different genre with every film he makes, he has so far adapted voyeur drama Hallam Foe with Jamie Bell, made gritty prison film Starred Up with Jack OConnell, and music festival rom-com with Luke Treadaway. The latter was released in 2011, the same year his long-delayed and totally underrated Perfect Sense (formerly The Last Word) finally saw the light of day as well. Bizarrely, few bothered to watch it, despite Ewan McGregor and Eva Green starring in the lead roles and a high concept accessible to anyone. The film follows a couple as they succumb to a very sci-fi virus that slowly erases all human senses, as their relationship breaks down according to all of the anxiety, anger and pain they suffer as a result of the virus. Its definitely not a happy film, or easy to watch, but the lead performances and authentic Glasgow setting agreeably ground the science fiction elements.
