20 Highest-Grossing Movie Franchises Ranked Worst To Best

3. Star Trek

Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Darth Vader
Paramount Pictures

Worldwide box office: $2.26 billion.

Sorry, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to be that guy who dares to suggest Star Trek is better than Star Wars. This isn't an easy choice, and picking sides in this age-old debate is like being stuck between a rock and a hard place, but the truth is Star Trek has to be the stronger series through consistency alone.

Premiering in 1979, the Star Trek movie empire currently consists of thirteen movies split between the original Enterprise crew, The Next Generation line-up, and the relatively recent Kelvin Timeline reboot.

Featuring a stacked cast led by the likes of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana, the series includes the unforgettable Wrath of Khan, the underrated Search for Spock and the excellent Voyage Home, all of which came out within four years of each other.

Even in the weaker Next Generation years, Star Trek was phenomenal, staying away from a strict formula, playing with genre with unlimited confidence, and pushing its characters more than ever before. It's truly a spectacular achievement, even if Star Wars continuously trounced it at the box office.
