20 Highest Grossing Movies of 2014 - Ranked From Worst To Best

18. Rio 2

Taking the tried and tested formula that most animated sequels adhere to, Rio 2 stuck to what worked in the original and just made it bigger, bolder and brighter. Despite being one of the more generic and forgettable family-orientated franchises, as the first major animated release of the year the Amazon-set sequel was the go-to option for younger audiences when it hit theaters in March, resulting in a box office total just shy of $500m. Although Rio 2 features some stunning animation and several strong voice performances, nothing about the movie is particularly memorable. Studio sequel-making at its most by-the-numbers, full of quirky supporting characters and elaborate musical numbers, there is so much going on in every frame that younger viewers will find plenty to enjoy, but there isn't much to recommend for the older demographic. The best animated movies appeal to all generations, but despite its commercial success Rio 2 remains of the blander animated sequels.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
